Renewable Energy & Water Independence Systems
project brief
Website Redesign and Custom Build for a Solar & Water Independence Specialist
Solarain needed a website that could do two things at once: make a fairly technical, high-investment decision feel approachable, and prove, convincingly, that one provider could be trusted to handle both power and water rather than juggling separate solar and plumbing contractors. Operating out of Plettenberg Bay and serving homes, smallholdings and businesses across Knysna and the Garden Route, the brief called for a professional website redesign that reflected the seriousness of the service without losing the warmth of a founder who genuinely lives this lifestyle.
This meant a custom website design was non-negotiable rather than a generic template. The site needed to hold two distinct product lines, solar energy systems and rainwater and water systems, each with its own sub-services, while still reading as one cohesive, single-accountable brand from the homepage down.
My role, as the freelance web designer behind the project, was to redesign the brand’s digital presence from the ground up and handle the full website development myself: structuring the information architecture, designing the UI/UX, and building a custom WordPress site capable of growing as Solarain adds services and service areas.
Challenges & Objectives
Solarain’s offering spans two categories that are easy to present as competing services rather than one integrated solution: solar (grid-tied, hybrid, off-grid, battery backup) and water (rainwater harvesting, purification and filtration, storage and backup), each needing its own explanation, imagery and call to action. Without careful structure, that range risked feeling fragmented or overwhelming to a first-time visitor.
The objectives for the website redesign were to position Solarain around a single clear promise, energy and water independence, rather than a list of individual products, to design a dual-pillar navigation that let visitors self-select into Solar or Water without losing sight of the combined offering, and to build trust quickly using the founder’s own eight years of off-grid living as proof, not just a marketing claim.
The site also needed a straightforward, repeatable enquiry path. Given the size of investment involved, the objective wasn’t just traffic, it was getting visitors comfortable enough to book a home assessment.
Approach
01
Strategy & Positioning
I started with a discovery session to understand the Garden Route market, load shedding, water restrictions, ageing municipal infrastructure, and how Solarain’s dual offering solved both problems at once. This shaped a site structure built around “independence” as the core message, with Water and Solar as two clearly signposted but connected paths through the site.
02
UI/UX Design
I designed a visual, benefit-led interface that puts the two service pillars side by side from the homepage, backed by a founder-story section that puts real, lived off-grid experience front and centre rather than burying it on an About page. Every section carries a consistent path back to booking an assessment.
03
Custom WordPress Development
I built Solarain a fully custom WordPress site rather than relying on a stock theme, with dedicated templates for each Water and Solar sub-service, from rainwater harvesting and filtration through to grid-tied, hybrid and off-grid solar and battery backup, sharing one consistent visual language throughout.
04
Content Structure & Conversion Design
I built out a four-step “how it works” process (Assess, Design, Install, Support) so visitors understand exactly what happens after they enquire, alongside a benefits section that directly answers the objections a homeowner is likely weighing, reliability during load shedding, water security, running costs, and property value, before they ever pick up the phone.

A dual-pillar structure separating Water and Solar clearly, while keeping one cohesive brand across the site.
Trust-driven storytelling, using the founder’s eight years of off-grid living as real proof rather than a marketing claim.
A guided enquiry journey, with a consistent “Book a Home Assessment” CTA shortening the path from visitor to consultation.
A fully custom website build engineered to scale as Solarain adds new services, service areas and content over time.
